Media giant Tronc replaced the newspaper’s top editor of the Virginian Pilot with Marisa Porto, who also leads the Daily Press in Newport News. Porto added “publisher” to her job description at the Daily Press Media Group in March 2016.
For the previous five years, she had served as “vice president of content,” overseeing the newsrooms of the Daily Press, The Virginia Gazette in Williamsburg and the Tidewater Review in West Point.
Porto will remain the editor of the Daily Press and split her time between the two newspapers. When asked how she will manage running two major publications simultaneously, Porto said: “That’s what conference calls are for.”

Porto is currently serving a four-year term to the Virginia Freedom of Information advisory council, a statewide council that helps guide legislative decisions about open meeting and records issues in the commonwealth. She recently joined the Board of Directors of the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association, and is a member of the News Leadership Council for The Trust Project, a group of more than 70 news organizations from around the world working to develop a system to ensure and reflect transparency in news stories.
