“It’s an honor to have Oceana host this event,” said Captain Chad Vincelette, Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana. “I’m thankful to the Chamber for hosting and raising money for wounded warriors,” said Vincelette.
More than 100 golfers participated in the Hampton Roads Chamber’s third annual Wounded Warrior Golf Outing at NAS Oceana’s Aeropines Golf Course on Thursday, September 12. The Golf Outing honors and raises awareness for wounded warriors in Hampton Roads, with a portion of the proceeds going to Navy Safe Harbor.
“Thank you for your service and sacrifice to this great nation,” began Bryan K. Stephens, President and CEO of the Hampton Roads Chamber. The event began with Stephens thanking the audience and outlining the objectives of the outing. “There are three goals of the Wounded Warrior Golf Outing today,” said Stephens. “The first goal is to raise money for Wounded Warriors, the second is fun and networking, and the third goal is to stay safe and hydrated.”
One Wounded Warrior in attendance, Andrea Martinez, Retired Navy, Chief Petty Officer spoke about her personal experiences. “Prior to 2013 I was a person who felt whole,” said Martinez. After Martinez’s deployment in Afghanistan, she returned to the states suffering from a traumatic brain injury. “I felt lost,” Martinez said. “The kindness and compassion I experienced with Navy Safe Harbor was instrumental to keeping me from taking my life.”
The Navy Safe Harbor Foundation aims to ensure service members are given an opportunity to recover after serious injuries by providing them with resources and support programs. “It’s a reminder that we matter, and it helps us to connect with other people.” said Martinez.
This Chamber means business, and is committed to partnering with local operations such as the Navy Safe Harbor Foundation to improve the local workforce, help local businesses expand, and provide networking opportunities for wounded warriors and veterans.
The Golf Outing concluded with an awards ceremony and a silent auction raising more than $1200 for the Navy Safe Harbor Foundation.
