Gov. Northam Celebrate's VA’s Leadership in Education Technology in the NEON District
Local leaders experienced firsthand the latest in Google classroom technology

NORFOLK -- It was back-to-school for Governor Ralph Northam.

Northam spent part of an afternoon at Amplified IT in Norfolk’s NEON District to congratulate them on winning Google’s Global Cloud Partner of the Year Award for their work in educational technology earlier this month.

Northam, Mayor Kenny Alexander and other elected and appointed officials got the opportunity to experience firsthand the classroom of tomorrow. The Amplified IT team had stations set up to demonstrate some of the key Google for Education innovation millions of teachers and students will find waiting for them when schools reopen this fall.

“We are happy to have a tremendous innovator like Amplified IT in the Commonwealth,” said Northam. “I am pleased to join Google in recognizing the powerful work they do in classrooms across the country to prepare our students for success in high-tech, 21st-century careers.”

Amplified IT has assisted over 4,000 school districts across 46 states, playing a role in the daily education of more than 24,000,000 students. They have worked with 10 of the 15 largest school districts in the country, including New York City, Atlanta, and Chicago, along with 76 school districts in the Commonwealth.

The pipelines for the future of America’s high tech classrooms is being laid right here in Virginia, in a small start-up in Norfolk.

“We’re giving our students access to technology that has shown to improve learning and the ability to collaborate,” said Amplified IT’s Tim Lee, who co-founded the company in 2011. “In so doing we’re also training the remote workforce of the future.”

Amplified IT assists schools in developing actionable technology roadmaps for using Google for Education to support their learning initiatives.  This guidance helps to prepare schools to implement Chromebooks and Google’s Suite of services, such as Google Classroom, which teaches students invaluable literacies like digital citizenship and online ethics.
