Virginia is one of 27 states that have passed right-to-work laws. In anticipation of the 2020 General Assembly session, it’s important to remember that keeping Virginia a right-to-work state will support the business community.

Virginia is the No.1state in the nation to do business for many of reasons, and our right-to-work status is one of them. The commonwealth’s right-to-work laws are a critical component of our pro-business environment and a key element of our economic success. Companies looking to expand or relocate often consider whether states have right-to-work laws since they are considered the most attractive locations for businesses to invest, grow and produce revenue.

Additionally, there is a connection between right-to-work laws and better economic performance. According to the National Institute for Labor Relations Research, right-to-work states have benefited from a 10.8% growth in the number of people employed in 2019 versus unionized states, which have only seen a 5% growth rate. Maintaining Virginia’s right-to-work status is a win for business as well as employees.

In the commonwealth, workers and businesses now have a choice about union membership. We urge our legislators to support the right-to-work law to maintain a healthy and prosperous business economy.
