The second annual Small Business Saturday will be held on November 26, 2011. This event, started in 2010 by American Express, was designed to recognize the contributions to, and importance of, small businesses in their communities. More than 200 organizations have already joined American Express OPEN, the company’s small business unit, in declaring the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the busiest shopping weekend of the year, as Small Business Saturday.
The importance of small businesses to their communities is unprecedented. Owners of these businesses create jobs, pay taxes which support the local community and provide the goods and services that help contribute to the overall quality of life for residents.
Facebook, Google and Twitter have all collaborated with American Express and designed a comprehensive toolkit that small business owners can use to promote their stores and the event. Promotions through traditional signage, to the enhancement of online websites, are designed to increase the community’s awareness of small business presence. The toolkit provides ideas and examples of promotions that other store owners are using. The goal is to generate interest and excitement while attracting customers to the stores.
