Virginia Beach, VA — The Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce will hold its Virginia Beach State of the Schools & Partners in Education Luncheon on Wednesday, October 13, at 12:00pm at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. This event will provide the business community a closer look at the return on investment Virginia Beach City Public Schools is providing taxpayers. It will also address the school division’s strengths and challenges as well as include an overview of Compass to 2015, the strategic plan guiding change and improvement to the city’s public education services. Business, civilian and military leaders who have provided materials, financial, or human resources to promote the growth of the city's students will also be recognized.
Dr. James Merrill, Superintendent of Virginia Beach Public Schools, is the guest speaker for the event. Dr. James G. Merrill, a 37-year veteran educator, assumed the superintendency of Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS), the largest school division in Hampton Roads and third largest in the state, in 2006. Dr. Merrill has spearheaded the creation and implementation of Compass to 2015: a Strategic Plan for Student Success, which focuses on a single goal - all VBCPS students will be academically proficient, effective communicators and collaborators, globally aware, independent and responsible learners and citizens as well as critical and creative thinkers, innovators and problem solvers. He has also strategically implemented a comprehensive savings and efficiencies program that over the last four years has saved the district $30.3 million.
