Downtown Tunnel Midtown Tunnel MLK Extension Project

Courtesy of Hampton Roads Planning District Commission.On February 24, 2011, the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce sent a letter to the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Ray LaHood, in support for federal funding assistance under the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) Credit Program for the proposed Midtown Tunnel/Downtown Tunnel/Martin Luther King Extension project.  The requested loan assistance would greatly assist the state and the region to reduce the proposed toll rates for the tunnels by an estimated $.30 -$.35, and assist in bringing the projected toll to the $1.50 range.  The Chamber noted that the TIFIA loan would allow the region to finally address the congestion at the Midtown Tunnel which is the most heavily traveled bi-directional tunnel east of the Mississippi.

The video below provides Secretary LaHood an excellent case that this region needs to receive the Federal TIFIA loan program assistance so that we can address traffic congestion, environmental sustainability, and economic competiveness in the decades to come.
