August Sales Tax Holiday will take place August 1-3, 2014 and all Virginia merchants are required to participate. During this three-day period, purchases of certain school supplies, clothing and footwear will be exempt from the Virginia sales tax. The majority of Virginia has a 5.3 percent state and local sales tax but Hampton Roads localities and most of Northern Virginia have a 6 percent sales tax. “School supplies,” including items such as binders, notebooks, folders and calculators priced at $20 or less will be exempt. Click here and view Appendix A for the full list of school supplies eligible for the exemption. “School art supply,” “school instructional material,” and “school music supply” are also included in this list; however, computers or “school computer supplies” and such items will not be exempt of the tax.
Clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less will be exempt as well. Sporting equipment or footwear designed primarily for athletic activity or protective use will not be exempt. Click here and view Appendix B for the full list of clothing eligible for the exemption.
A sales tax holiday is a temporary period during which purchases of certain items are exempt from the sales and use taxes. Virginia now has three annual sales tax holidays following legislation enacted by the 2007 Session of the Virginia General Assembly. Virginia’s other two sales tax holidays are for hurricane preparedness in May and for energy-efficient appliances and water-saving items in October.Visit the Virginia Department of Taxation's website for more details.
