Volunteers Needed for AAU Junior Olympic Games Being Held July 29 to August 7
Hampton Roads Sports Commission Seeking More Than 1,000 Local Volunteers

WHAT:          

The AAU Junior Olympic Games, produced by the Hampton Roads Sports Commission, an affiliate of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, will bring nearly 45,000 athletes, families and fans from all 50 states. Billed as one of the largest amateur multi-sport events for youth in the country, the 10-day series encompasses 20 sports in all. 

WHO:             

1,300 volunteers are needed.  Volunteer opportunities include: sport specific responsibilities, registration, hospitality, event set-up and event tear down.  You must be at least 16 years old and groups are welcome.  Volunteers will receive a free t-shirt! 

WHEN:          

Thursday, July 29 – Saturday, August 7, 2010 from 8am-6pm.  A variety of dates and times are available.

WHERE:        

Twenty events are slated for venues in Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, and Virginia BeachMajor venues include: 

-       Boo Williams Sportsplex, Hampton

-       Brittingham Midtown Community Center, Newport News

-       Chesapeake Conference Center, Chesapeake

-       Hickory High School, Chesapeake

-       Oscar Smith High School, Chesapeake

-       Norfolk State University, Norfolk

-       Pinboy's at the Beach, Virginia Beach

-       Virginia Beach Boardwalk & Oceanfront, 5th St.-12th St.

-       Virginia Beach Convention Center

-       Virginia Beach National Training Center

About the Hampton Roads Sports Commission

In February of 1999, the Hampton Roads Sports Commission was formed as a public/private partnership among the seven cities of the Hampton Roads Region: Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Hampton and Newport News, and the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce.  The Commission’s primary function is to attract major amateur athletic events to the area and to emphasize regional collaboration.
