Chamber Announces Support of Governor McDonnell’s Transportation Funding Plan

On January 13, the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, on behalf of its nearly 2,000 member firms, announced its support of Governor Bob McDonnell’s transportation funding plan.  The Chamber joined many other respected business organizations from across Virginia lending their support.  The Governor proposes to allocated state revenues and leverage the prudent use of bonds to invest $4 billion to accelerate road, transit and rail projects in the Commonwealth during the next three years. “We view the Governor’s proposals as an important first step in achieving our organization’s longstanding objective of providing for a sustained and dedicated transportation funding source,” said Chamber President & CEO Jack Hornbeck.  He added, “Our future economic prosperity in Hampton Roads hinges upon making strategic improvements to our roads, bridges, tunnels and rail infrastructure.”

On January 14, Governor Bob McDonnell announced additional components of his transportation improvement agenda at a morning press conference at the State Capitol. The new initiatives include a tax credit for the usage of barge and rail to transport cargo, and a bill that will grant flexibility to the VDOT Commissioner to find and create efficiencies and flexibilities within VDOT and in the overall transportation system.  Read press release
