Virginia Zoo Leading Conservation Actions from Cheetahs to Rhinos

Conservation is a priority for the Virginia Zoo and they are showing their commitment through a variety of events that include baby cheetahs, bowling for rhinos and hosting renowned international scientists in Norfolk.

Last week, the Virginia Zoo provided a rare opportunity for the public to meet three cheetah cubs during a fascinating presentation from Mary Wykstra, Director of Action for Cheetahs in Kenya (ACK). Wykstra, who lives in Kenya and is visiting the United States, presented her work saving cheetahs in the wild and the measures taken to protect their future. The event raised more than $10,000 for ACK, which will support her fieldwork and research.

Saturday, the Tidewater Chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers hosted their fourth annual Bowling for Rhinos. The organization, which consists of keepers, educators and volunteers from the Virginia Zoo, the Virginia Aquarium and the Virginia Living Museum, brought out 125 bowlers to raise $5,700 through a silent auction and a night of bowling. The money supports a continued effort to help protect endangered rhinos as well as the ecosystems they live in. More than $7.2 million has been raised nationally since 1990 through this event.

Coming this weekend the Zoo welcomes Dr. Jamartin Sihite, Director of the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation. Dr. Sihite is a long-time conservation activist with a huge passion and long experience supporting Indonesia’s most famous protected species of orangutans. The community has the chance to meet Dr. Sihite in a captivating presentation this Sunday in the Virginia Zoo's World of Reptiles classroom. The presentation is free with regular Zoo admission. To RSVP, visit
