2010 AAU Junior Olympics Nominated for a SportsTravel Award

Hampton Roads Sports Commission LogoSportsTravel magazine has announced that the 2010 AAU Junior Olympics has been nominated for a 2011 SportsTravel Award.  This event, produced by the Hampton Roads Sports Commission, an affiliate of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, returned to Hampton Roads last summer from July 29-August 7.  Of the nearly 15,000 athletes ages 6-17 competing for top honors, more than 800 were from Virginia. The Games were held at venues in Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.  The events, 18 in all, ranged from team sports including jump rope, beach volleyball, wrestling and field hockey to individual competitions such as gymnastics, weightlifting, swimming, table tennis and track and field events.

Events are nominated by the readers of SportsTravel, the sports world's event magazine. Criteria for nomination and voting include superior organization of and attendance at the event, a superior experience for the competitors and/or spectators at the event, and how the site or venue served to enhance the event. Final balloting is open through August 15, 2011. Winners will be announced at the TEAMS '11 Conference & Expo, October 3-6, 2011, in Las Vegas.

2010 AAU Junior Olympics“Since the location of the event is a major part of the criteria for being nominated, the people of Hampton Roads should take great pride in knowing that an event held in their city is being recognized for its excellence," said Timothy Schneider, publisher of SportsTravel magazine, which organizes the TEAMS Conference & Expo. "SportsTravel readers are the leaders of the sports-event industry and they really know what it takes to execute a high-quality athletic event," said Schneider. "The SportsTravel Awards program is an opportunity for them to honor their peers and the cities that host sporting events for a job well done."

Official ballots are available in the July and August issues of SportsTravel magazine. Readers may also find more information and vote online at http://www.SportsTravelMagazine.com. The ballot includes nominees in amateur, collegiate and professional categories. Awards in those three categories will be given for best single-sport event, best multi-sport or multi-discipline event, and best sports event series or circuit. Voters will also pick the best new sports event and an overall Sports Event of the Year from among the nominated events.
