On April 12, the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce hosted a Military Recognition Reception from 3-5pm at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott. This reception, held to honor the hard-working men and women of the military, recognized over 100 military personnel from local commands. The service members were joined at the reception by their families, military leadership, elected officials, and businessmen and women from the region.
The reception’s guest speaker was Dr. Bruce Brunson, retired commander of the USN. Dr. Brunson enlisted in the U.S Navy upon high school graduation in 1969 and was later selected to attend the U.S. Naval Academy. He retired in 1995 after 22 years of service as a naval aviator. Brunson is the executive director of Tidewater Community College’s Center for Military and Veterans Education in Virginia Beach.
Brunson explained to the crowd that the Tidewater Community College Center for Military and Veterans Education helps veterans find employment. He said that planning is key, and that looking ahead is important in every stage of life. Dr. Brunson gave advice to the honorees, saying, “Look to see what you can make a living wage at if something happens when you are trying to get to college”. Brunson added, “We have companies every day that hire only veterans, but the difference is, it’s how many jobs you’ve had in the military, how many times have you retrained.” Of the 55 staff dedicated to helping veterans at Tidewater Community College, Brunson said, “They can show you where you are going and how to succeed.”
The Chamber holds Military Recognition Receptions twice a year because the military community is such an important part of our region. The Chamber has been recognizing the accomplishments of the military at this reception for more than 15 years.
