On August 16, the Chamber will host its Military Recognition Reception at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott from 3-5pm. This is an informal opportunity for the business community to provide additional recognition to the men and women serving our country on our behalf and freedom and thank them personally for a job well done.
The guest speaker is Dr. Tony Atwater. Tony Atwater was appointed the fifth president of Norfolk State University on April 22, 2011. A native of Nashville, Tenn., Atwater earned a Ph.D. in communication research from Michigan State University in 1983, where he was the recipient of a competitive doctoral fellowship. He completed post-doctoral studies in the Department of Communication at the University of Michigan in 1989. He also earned a bachelor's degree in mass media arts from Hampton University in 1973. Additionally, he holds three graduate certificates in higher education administration from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Throughout his career, Atwater has assumed significant community leadership roles. These efforts include serving on the Governor’s Task Force on Youth and Substance Abuse Prevention in Kentucky; the Board of Trustees of the Northwest Ohio Public Television Foundation; and the Indiana County Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the 2000-01 delegation of Leadership Cincinnati and the Advisory Board of KeyBank in the Northeast Ohio Region. Additionally, he was past president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
Atwater is the author of approximately 30 referred journal articles on news selection behavior in the mass media—the subject of his research interests.
