What are your business's core values, goals, and overall mission?

We hold dearly to the core values of our founder, Joseph C. Jefferds, Jr. who said; “Materials handling pertains to the moving of anything from one place to another with a minimum of labor and handling.”¯ (Jefferds, J. 1949) Still to this day, we continue to strive for new and innovative ways of materials handling, Joe said it best; increase the productive capacity of workers¯ (Jefferds, J. 1948) through the use of materials handling equipment.

Our goals are still the same as they were in 1947; Reduce the number of handlings of material; thereby, making the operations easier and faster.¯ (Jefferds, J. 1949). We strive each day to achieve efficiency and proficiency in materials handling.

From that first day in 1947 to today, our mission is still the same; Relationships!  We are a family here at Jefferds/Homestead, and each new and present customer is simply an extension of our growing family.  We pride ourselves on building new and long lasting relationships with our customers, many of which have been with us since 1947, which is a great testimony to customer service!

Share some unique facts and business history? What makes your business stand out?

Joseph C. Jefferds, Jr. founded the company on June 6, 1947 with Junius T. Moore to form Jefferds and Moore Inc.  Mr. Moore was always non-active in the business but he was a great resource for Joe.  In those early days, Joe not only sold materials handling equipment, he also assisted plants, wholesalers, and other establishments with their mechanical engineering needs.

One key element that makes Jefferds / Homestead Materials Handling stand out, is the shear dedication to being the very best materials handling specialist consumers can find.  Our diversification means that we solve problems by the application of the best method.

What products or services do you offer companies or individuals?

We are a professional materials handling equipment distributor, dedicated to solving our customer’s needs.  We sell, install, and maintain superior products that have stood the test of time. We desire to do every job right the first time, on time, every time!

What are the greatest obstacles and/or challenges that your business has faced? How have you and your business overcome them?

Our home base is situated in St. Albans, WV; right in the heart of the coal industry.  In recent years, we’ve seen a downturn in the coal industry, which has created a myriad of problems within WV.  To offset that downturn, we have constructed a dynamic business model of expansion into the Hampton Roads and surrounding areas.  Our newest expansion is located in Chesapeake, VA and is already proving the business model a success.

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

First and foremost, we want to honor the late Joseph C. Jefferds, Jr. for all of his great accomplishments.  He created a great business with a great culture and as the 12th Branch in a growing company, we want to continue the legacy of excellence.

We are proud of our employees!  They have made the Jefferds way their own, and many have made this company shine!  The proof is in the pudding! We are growing; with 5 Jefferds locations in West Virginia, and now, 7 locations in Virginia, we are becoming one of the most successful material handling companies on the Eastern Seaboard by simply doing the right things right.

What do you see for the future of your business?

We are, as we have been for almost 70 years, optimistic about the future of this country and our region.  We believe that we will continue to grow and expand by caring for our customers and we will nurture those relationships.

Why are you a member of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce?

We want to be an active part of this community.  To do that, we want to know our business neighbors and we want to understand what they do and how they do it.
