Great leadership can lead to great change, and the Hampton Roads Chamber is doing everything we can to be proactive in igniting that change. The Chamber is honored to be partnering with Old Dominion University’s Strome College of Business and Dean Jeff Tanner for the 2017 – 2018 Chamber Strome Business Series.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with ODU’s Strome College of Business on this exciting new series of events.  Our mission is to set the conditions for businesses to succeed,” said Bryan K. Stephens, President and CEO of the Hampton Roads Chamber. “This new series of guest speakers and forums are designed to inform the business community about novel new business models, concepts and best practices from nationally recognized leaders.  Our intent is for them to be innovative, leading-edge and meaningful to the entrepreneur to the CEO and all business leaders in between.”

This innovative series is providing business leaders and emerging student leaders with speakers who are changing the economic footprint in America. We have invited the disruptors, the innovators, and the change-makers to share their ideology and best practices for igniting economic growth for Hampton Roads businesses and the region.

“We are bringing global business leaders to Hampton Roads in this series,” said Jeff Tanner, Dean of Old Dominion University’s Strome College of Business. “This is an important role for both organizations to raise awareness for important business topics.”

The dynamic line-up for the 2017-2018 Chamber Strome Business Series is as follows:

November 15, 2017: Disruptors

He helped to build out the finance and investment function of charity: water, and continues to work at the intersection of non-profits and global development through Incandescent and Purpose.

March 21, 2018: Emergence of Today’s Machines
Joshua Sullivan and Angela Zutavern, authors of The Mathematical Corporation: Where Machine Intelligence and Human Ingenuity Achieve the Impossible, share how the emergence of today’s machine age is a once-in-a-decade breaking point that will transform business competition at least as dramatically as the quality revolution of the 1980s or the dawn of the internet age of the 1990s. They show business leaders how to compete in this new era, by combining the mathematical smarts of machines with the intellect of visionary leaders.

May 2, 2018: Start-Ups
Chris Heivly, dubbed “the Start-Up Whisperer,” is the co-founder of Mapquest and author of Build the Fort. Heivly is a speaker, investor, mentor and start-up founder. In Build the Fort Heivly breaks down his personal fort-building experiences and uses them as an analogy to his journey as co-founder of MapQuest and the Startup Factory (a seed-stage investor and mentorship program). Heivly’s company, Startup Factory, is a highly successful venture investment firm with nearly forty companies under its wings.

The Hampton Roads Chamber vision is to ensure a flourishing environment for business prosperity. With the Chamber Strome Business Series, we are providing the Hampton Roads community with diverse leaders who specialize in various backgrounds that will have great influence on strengthening business opportunities and preparing this region for growth.
