Virginia Beach is the greatest city in the country, says a new survey
As seen in The Virginian-Pilot

Mayor Will Sessoms often claims Virginia Beach is the “greatest city in the world.” A new ranking agrees that it's at least the greatest in the U.S.

WalletHub, a website that provides free financial information, evaluated the country’s 62 largest cities and ranked them in order of livability. Yup, Virginia Beach came out on top.

The study based the rankings on crime data, school systems, affordability, public transportation and the economy. It also considered “quality of life” factors, like coffee shops, fitness centers, beaches and parks per capita.

"Big cities epitomize opportunity, economic or otherwise, which appeals especially to young professionals seeking advancement in their careers and social lives," WalletHub wrote about the rankings.

Virginia Beach received an overall score of 63.41 percent, almost a full percentage point higher than the second-best big city to live in, Seattle.

That's right, Virginia Beach is a better place to live than Seattle. Take that Hipstersville.

To make the list, a city needed a population of over 300,000, so no other city in Virginia qualified.

According to WalletHub’s analysis, Virginia Beach has:

• The highest homeownership rate of all 62 cities.

• The lowest percentage of the population living in poverty.

• The second-highest percentage of residents 25 and older with a high school diploma or more.

• The lowest crime rate of all the country’s big cities.

Virginia Beach did get one ding in its score: It’s among the five cities ranked as having the highest average weekly work hours, a negative attribute in WalletHub’s study.
