Governor Terry McAuliffe and His Cabinet Visit Hampton Roads
The Governor and his cabinet visited Hampton Roads to speak to local business leaders.

"When the region works together, no other region in the nation can compare to Hampton Roads," said Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, "The Hampton Roads Chamber is the greatest chamber in the state and no region has more potential."

Governor McAuliffe addressed a large crowd of Hampton Roads business leaders during his "Governor and His Cabinet on The Road" tour on April 13th.  The Hampton Roads Chamber was honored to host the Governor and members of his cabinet for a luncheon at the Chesapeake Conference Center.  Each member of the cabinet hosted a table of local business leaders from their respective industry, allowing them to truly engage with the community and share information that will help shape the future of Virginia.

During his remarks, Governor McAuliffe touched on areas of great importance to Hampton Roads, such as the Port of Virginia earning "three straight years of profits" and the need for the Atlantic Coast Pipeline.  "We need to lead on wind and solar," said Governor McAuliffe, "but I am also a big proponent of the pipeline. We need to bring more natural gas to Hampton Roads."

Governor McAuliffe highlighted the recent report of unemployment claims at a 44 year low, but stressed the importance of workforce development  in Virginia, "it all starts with education," he said, "we're leaning in on 21st centaury technology. " Governor McAuliffe stressed the importance of filling the 36,000 cyber jobs currently open in Virginia, especially when, as he stated, "we're going to operate on a continuing resolution and sequestration cuts may be worse."   While not all of his statistics were positive for Hampton Roads, the Governor's outlook for the region is bright, even in light of the recently proposed federal budget that would drastically cut funding for the Chesapeake Bay.  "We have to clean up the bay," said the Governor, "it's a huge asset and critical for tourism in Virginia.  I don't think this President will be successful in cutting bay funding."

"I love this region," said Governor McAuliffe, "I want to thank the Hampton Roads Chamber for leading the way."

About the event, Bryan K. Stephens, President and CEO of the Hampton Roads Chamber stated, “We were very honored to have Governor McAulliffe and his Cabinet here today.  It's always good to hear directly from the decision makers and we're appreciative Governor McAulliffe and his team were here to meet and dialog with business leaders from all across Hampton Roads. Hosting Governor McAulliffe and his Cabinet provided a unique and important opportunity for key stakeholders in our region to talk about the issues that are affecting their businesses with those who have the power to influence regulations and legislative priorities.  Hampton Roads is essential to the economy of Virginia and the Hampton Roads Chamber’s primary mission is to ensure the conditions are set to allow businesses in Hampton Roads to be successful; because if they are successful our economy will flourish”.
